offer a two-years MA in Philosophy
under the acronym LILIPHI
(“International Master in Philosophy Lisbon/Lille”)
leading to a double diploma
Context
Lisbon and Lille are vibrant European cities, and their respective philosophy departments are ones of the most important in Portugal and in France. The Universities of Lisbon and Lille are well-known for their international, pluralistic tradition, spanning both continental and analytical philosophy, and for their collegial atmosphere. The MA specializes on philosophy from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Students take part in research seminars focusing on most aspects of philosophical investigation. The Master Program feeds into a successful PhD program. Postgraduate students in Lisbon and Lille are organized in study groups and regularly present their work at joint research seminars possibly involving neighbouring universities. They can also interact with other researchers in the Graduate Program.
Language
All the coursework is done in English, including the master thesis.
Training Objectives
Do you have a research project in the field of philosophy or, more specifically, in contemporary philosophy? Would you like to use English as a working language? Are you interested in an internationally oriented training, allowing you to meet different cultures and research environments? The LILIPHIL Master in Philosophy and Contemporary Philosophy in joint partnership between the University of Lisbon and the University of Lille offers international training in a wide range of philosophical debates. The proposed teachings are organised over two years, the first one in Lisbon and the second one in Lille, and are subject of recognised teachings and research activities both at CFLUL (“Centro de Filosofia”) and at the Philosophy Department of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon as well as at STL Multidisciplinary Laboratory (“Savoirs, Textes et Langage”) and at the Philosophy Department of the University of Lille.
Specificities of the Training
o Training in philosophical research entirely in English.
o Introduction to the main currents, problems and legacies of contemporary philosophy, in the light of a solid training in history of philosophy.
o An opportunity to start an international career.
Research Support
The courses of the double master degree in Philosophy/Contemporary Philosophy are based on the scientific projects of CFLUL and STL, at the Universities of Lisbon and Lille.
The targeted skills aim at
o Being familiar with a solid training in the historical understanding of philosophy and, at the same time, with the various currents of contemporary philosophy under debate in the international philosophical community.
o Producing philosophical reflection.
o Contextualising information appropriately sorted.
o Critically reviewing.
o Constructing his/her own philosophical problematic.
o Addressing specific philosophical issue in the light of the current state of scholarly debate.
o Critically analysing theoretical texts.
o Compiling a bibliography and searching for references in specialised libraries and on the Internet
o Speaking English to many different audiences.
o Debate: proposing arguments and counterarguments.
o Working as a team.
*Academic Prerequisites*
Normally, students are expected to hold a BA in Philosophy. Students who do not have a major in Philosophy may be accepted on condition that they take a certain number of supplementary courses in BA and MA programs.
